Plan B

My original idea for yellow-orange from project 64 didn't work out. So on to plan B. I must say I'm happy with the outcome. Something different.

We walked a Civil War battlefield this morning and came across this weird site: a cow skull stuck between two trees.

Talking about weird, when I showed Steve yesterday's stranger pictures he thought that this is really creepy, taking pictures of unsuspecting people. I should at least ask for permission (he doesn't like the whole stranger pictures idea). What do you think? I'll try asking first next time and see how they react to the idea.Pin It

Edit Me

Through Melissa I found this edit-me challenge. I thought it would be fun to participate, especially since it's great practice learning photoshop. And since I had time today I jumped in. This is the original photo:
I think all of the previous edits look great. It's such a great picture that goes with any antique feel. And here is my edit:
  • I added februarymagic texture from Kim Klassen, darker color,  and set it to 34% opacity
  • brightened
  • less saturated
  • cropped
  • watermark
The cropping was a little bit of a challenge. I wanted to concentrate on the wagon and the house and get rid of most of the grass while keeping a 4x6 ratio.. but that didn't really work out. So I changed my ratio.

Good Night

It was already late and I hadn't taken a picture yet. When going outside to get something from the car I noticed that the sky had a really nice dark blue color that looked like it was lit up. I was a little bit disappointed when the pictures I took didn't show that. So when opening it up in PSE I remembered that I can change the white balance settings if shot in RAW - I changed it to tungsten and voilĂ  - there it is. I should have known that street lights should work like shooting indoors.Pin It

Summer heat is here and the only way to stay somewhat cool is some water play :)Pin It

I'm so behind with posting this week. I actually just meant to post today's picture- but then got hooked on catching up with the ones taken earlier this week, even though I'm extremely exhausted. Again.

Between our neighbor's fence and ours there is this shrubbery weed growing that blooms quite beautiful at the moment. I love how the picture turned out with the color contrasts, the shallow DOF and the resulting softness of it. The only post processing done here was adding the watermark and converting it to a JPEG file.Pin It

I'm going to link this one up with project 64. After I saw Michelle's awesome snake picture I thought I must try something like this and adding textures was actually just covered in Kim Klassen's class (which I'm behind with again).
Stephen loves his rain boots and he wears them every time he is visiting his grandma - even if it means to pair them with shorts in hot muggy weather.

No time or interesting ideas. So one of the cats had to be the model again. Not a great picture, but at least I took one.Pin It

Good Morning

I cropped this a lot, hence the weird format, and changed the colors a little bit to get to a more dramatic look. This is more how I remember it looked like. I just love morning fog in summer when the sun makes everything look gorgeous.Pin It

Dreamy Peonies

I just seem to not get enough from flower pictures.. with all that rain we are having this year they are just too beautiful. As gorgeous as they are, I'll try to find something else to photograph in future. Need to step out of my comfort zone..Pin It

Grass Silhouette

I am glad that it had stopped raining when I got home from work. So I used that to head outside for a picture. The clouds were still showing the past and future rain storms, even though a little bit of sky peaked through.

Through someone's blog I came across the project 64 and it seems like something I could attempt. This photo still fits for last week's color Cerulean. This week: asparagus..

Beautiful Sunday

I spent a couple hours yesterday playing around with watermarks. I think I'll still change it a little bit - I think I want the circle more transparent. But I don't feel like doing it now. There is no editing on this picture done at all, just to show how nice the SOOC RAW files are.Pin It

Photoshop arrived the other day. Wow, so much new to learn. I decided to take Kim Klassen's free workshop again to get a basic introduction (the first time around I didn't finish it because I didn't have PS and most of what she described doesn't work with my old program.) Also, my laptop was completely full and the last couple weeks I've been deleting trash pictures right away to fit some more on there. Steve's computer died last week and it had to get wiped clean. Thankfully none of my pictures were on there. But that was a lesson learned and we got an external hard-drive. One more thing I didn't think about when I started this project. It seems like a bottomless pit - LOL.
My goal for now is to take as less pictures as possible each day to get used to the new editing. Also, the colors are very bright and saturated with the NEF files on PS, not at all like on picasa. That weird frame I had on the NEF files is also gone.. so this must be a picasa issue.
I can't wait for summer to come so I can fully dive into PS:)

I decided to add this photo in the I Heart challenge..

Tree on the fence

Like everyone else, I couldn't post this picture until a day later. My Wednesday post showed up, but its comments got lost.. I meant to return your visits the last couple days, but didn't get to it. So hopefully tomorrow.

This tree is growing through my neighbor's fence.Pin It

When Steve was cutting the grass today he noticed a turtle. I was glad to have a different subject for my POTD - even though it was hiding inside its shell. Later tonight I noticed this little bird in our front yard..much cuter than a turtle shell. I hope it's ok and will survive the night..It hasn't been moving for a while now and is calling for its mama.
Once I noticed how narrow my depth of field is again - for some reason I always have it set on the smallest setting possible - I changed it. However, this is the one photo with the cutest pose.Pin It

I realized afterwards that I should have used a larger aperture. It's still a sweet picture.
Just an update from my RAW experiments: I've been shooting a lot in both RAW + JPG - so I can compare better. And I must admit I really am starting to like RAW a lot - even with not having photoshop yet. The JPG colors seem so fake to me now..PS should arrive any day now:)Pin It

We were invited to a birthday party yesterday- our first time at chuck e cheese. Stephen not only enjoyed playing there, but especially liked the food! I'm surprised he could fall asleep with all that sugar rush.Pin It

I walked through our downtown today, trying to get some people pictures. I'm just horrible at it. There were a few interesting looking ones, but I am not confident enough to take a picture so it actually would look great. Vehicles it is instead.

I didn't take any picture today.. however, I would like to ask you to help me make some decisions. There is a photo show from amateurs only in our city and I can submit up to 5 photos. I really would love to participate and I've been going through my archive to see what I would like to show. It's a really hard decision to make. I would appreciate if you could help narrowing them down. Which 5 do you like best?
They want you to put a price on them, unless you don't want to sell them. What price would you think is appropriate?

Flowers again

More flowers since that's pretty much the only interesting thing I get to during the workweek. I love to take pictures of the iris. They are so pretty from all its angles.
I forgot the name of this shrub, but it has some interesting colors.

Two on Wednesday

Today's clouds were hanging very low again. I always find it difficult to also show that on photos how cool that can look. I had my old camera with me today, so while on the road I took some snap-shots. I really like how this one turned out.

At home, I took my new camera out and took a few more flower pictures. I love how the columbine from this angle turned out!

Monday Me

Thank you so much for all your encouragement, especially Melissa, Michelle, and Noreen!! I had my camera already set back to jpg, but after reading your comments I switched it back to RAW. I also ordered photoshop from amazon since it was such a great deal. Thank you, Melissa, for letting me know about it. Maybe the blue frame comes from picasa?
Currently I am using Corel Paint Shop for resizing - a free program that either came with the laptop or the other camera - I can't remember. I am hoping that the resizing will be with less issues using photoshop... and I actually can follow directions then from other people;) The top one is the 'original' RAW converted JPG file. The bottom one is 20% of its size with 506 x 727 pixels. I am thinking that it shouldn't come out that grainy with that size though.
